White camphor essential oil is steam distilled from the woody branches of the Cinnamomum camphora trees native to China. White camphor oil is only version of camphor oil that is recommended for aromatherapy since it has been modified for safety. The brown and yellow varieties of camphor oil contains high percentages of Safrole and should be avoided. White camphor oil is reported to relieve symptoms of cold and flu (congestion, chesty cough) when used in aromatherapy. It is also an effective insect repellent, particularly against flying insects.
